Historical Irony

It's ironic that I love history. I say this because I didn't do so well in History during High School. In fact, just the other day, I found one of my original report cards from then, and I got a D+ in Mr. Underwood's History Class. My worst grade ever! It wasn't until college, when I had Professor Magliari at CSU, Chico that I starting loving history. Today, thanks to him, I now love everything about history and always want to learn about the historical significance of the places/things that I see.

Yesterday, Ryan and I took a bike ride along the Brisbane river. Along the way, we passed the Brisbane Powerhouse and The Old Wool Stores.

The Brisbane Powerhouse was built in 1926. Starting in 1928, it used the water from the bordering river to power the early electric trams and to light the city. Today, it's a beautiful restaurant with outside dining on the river, a theater and the location for our favorite Saturday Farmers' Market.

Continuing along the river, you come across the Old Wool Stores built between 1909 and 1915. More recently, these buildings were renovated into deluxe apartments. Since the only thing that separates these buildings from the river is a swimming pool garden and a river boardwalk, the apartments, undoubtedly, have fantastic river views.







Even though Australia is a relatively young country, having been "discovered" in 1790, there seems to be a general desire to preserve all things of historical significance. Therefore, we are surrounded by lovely old architecture that, ironically, I have the inclination to not only photograph but also learn all about!
