The cancellation of the City's festivities, however, didn't stop Queenslanders from celebrating their National Day. In our neighborhood, there is a well known bar called The Story Bridge Hotel. They blocked off our street and crowds of people could be seen (and heard) celebrating all day long. The party at the Story Bridge Hotel culminated with the Annual Cockroach Race, which has taken place for 29 years. Yep, there was a Cockroach Race 50 yards from our apartment. That's how the Aussies celebrate their National Day.
Ryan and I decided it would be a good day to use the smoker, which he affectionately calls R2D2, and invite some friends over. Patty and Aaron both had to work, and Marg was flying back from New Zealand. So, Ryan and I had the day to ourselves before our friends arrived in the evening. We had a nice, relaxing day getting ready and watching The Australian Open on the Tele. Ryan woke up early and got the smoker going, and I took my time preparing the side dishes and dessert throughout the day.
All in all, we had a fantastic evening. At dinner, there were three Aussies and three Americans, which inevitably caused the conversation to be more global. And it was nice that Marg and Howard got to finally meet Patty and Aaron, and visa versa.
Traditionally, Australia Day is a day of summer time BBQ s and parties. We might be American, but "When in Rome, do what the Romans do" right?
